Parasites: Worms & Fleas
It is almost impossible to stop your animal from coming into contact with worms and fleas throughout its life. A regular worming and flea treatment regime tailored to your animal’s needs and lifestyle will help protect the health of your animal and family and also reduce contamination of the environment.
Our staff will be pleased to advise you about a suitable worming regime for your needs but below is a general guide:
WORMING
Cats
We recommend worming your kitten at 6, 9 and 12 weeks of age then every month until 6 months of age (16weeks, 20weeks, 24weeks) then every 3 months.
Adult cats should be wormed every 3 months.
For cats that are difficult to give worming tablets to – we have a spot on treatment which goes on the skin on the back of the neck which is very effective!
Dogs
Puppies can have roundworms from as young as 2 weeks of age. Therefore it is vital to worm your puppy every 2 weeks from 2 weeks of age until 12 weeks then every month until 6 months of age (eg: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 24 weeks) then every 3 months.
Adult dogs should be wormed every 3 months.
We have tasty chewable worm tablets which can make worming as simple as giving a ‘treat’!
FLEA TREATMENT
Cats & Dogs
One adult flea can produce up to 50 eggs a day!! Therefore, it is best to regularly treat for fleas to prevent an infestation which can quickly get out of hand! In just 21 days one flea can become 1,000!!
The most effective way of treating and preventing fleas is to use a product which kills the adult fleas PLUS the eggs and larvae.
The frequency of flea treating depends on the product used. We have a few different products with a treatment interval ranging between 4 weeks to 8 weeks. Our staff will be able to help you select the appropriate treatment for your pet.
