Microchipping
How would you feel if your pet went missing or got lost? Thousands of pets go missing each year and unfortunately many end up in rehoming centres as owners cannot be traced.
What can you do?
One simple way to ensure that your pet can be easily identified at all times is by having them microchipped.
What does microchipping involve?
Microchipping involves inserting a tiny microchip known as an Identichip under your pet's skin. Every microchip contains a unique code which is registered to each individual pet as a permanent means of identification. Once inserted each chip will be registered on a secure network with your pet's name, address and owner's contact details for use if your pet goes missing.
What happens if my pet goes missing?
If your pet is found a scanner will be used to detect the microchip and read the unique code stored on it. The database that stores each identichips personal information is accessible 24 hours a day. Once a microchip number has been detected the database can be accessed and the owners contact details be found, allowing each pet pet to be reunited with their owners.
Where can I get my pet microchipped?
You can have your pet microchipped at both the Oundle and Thrapston Veterinary Surgeries with any of the qualified vets or nurses.
The Importance of Microchipping - A True Story
Written by Lesley - Sedge's Owner
In May 2008 our friendly 14 month old Labrador, Sedge was stolen from her kennel. The crooks had also tried to steal her mother but she was older and wiser and managed to escape . We quickly contacted the veterinary surgery, police, the pound, dog shelters, put announcements in the newspapers and put up posters but to no avail.
She was sold by the thieves to a man who was living in Mansfield at a Country Fair in August 2008. Being used to gun dogs the man could immediately tell that she had been trained for the gun. Suspicious, he thought that if she had been his dog he would have wanted her back, so he took her to his local vets and had her scanned to see if she was microchipped. Fortunately, this revealed her unique microchip number: his suspicions were correct, she had been stolen and they rang me to say that she had been found and I could collect her from Mansfield. When we went to collect her she ran up and licked me and when she came home she ran straight back into her kennel! Glad to be back home although a little thin and bewildered, she soon returned to her usual boisterous self.
The feeling I had when she was stolen is unimaginable, I was totally bereft and if she hadn't been microchipped she wouldn't be back here today. All our 6 dogs are microchipped, I would not rest if they weren't.
